About Us

The CHRISTIAN CHURCH (Disciples of Christ) was founded in the early 1800’s in the United States. The founders envisioned a united church of Jesus Christ modeled after the New Testament.

What Do Disciples Believe?

LIKE MOST CHRISTIANS, DISCIPLES AFFIRM:

  • Jesus Christ is the son of the living God, and offers saving grace to all
  • All persons are God’s children

BELIEFS AND PRACTICES ASSOCIATED WITH COVENANT CHRISTIAN (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST) INCLUDE:

  • Open Communion - Celebrated in weekly worship Communion is open to all who believe in Jesus Christ. The denominations emblem is the red chalice with a white St. Andrew’s cross and is a reminder of the central part Communion plays in worship.
  • Freedom of Belief - Persons are free to follow their consciences guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, study, and prayer, and are expected to extend that freedom to others.
  • Baptism by immersion - Although Disciples practice by immersion, other baptism traditions are honored.
  • Belief in the oneness of the church-All Christians are called to be one in Christ and to seek opportunities for common witness and service.
  • The ministry of believers. Both ministers and lay persons (male & female) lead in worship, service and spiritual growth.

HISTORICAL SLOGANS OF THE DISCIPLES

“We have no creed but Christ, no book but the Bible, no law but love, no name but the Divine.” Early Stone-Campbell slogan

“Where the scriptures speak, we speak. Where the scriptures are silent, we are silent.” Introduced by Thomas Campbell

“In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, love.” Early Christian slogan attributed to various sources, including Rupertus Meldensius and adopted by Stone-Campbell churches

“But who is a Christian? I answer, everyone that believes in one’s heart that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah, the Son of God; repents on ones (originally his) sins and obeys him in all things according to one’s (originally his) measure of knowledge of his will.” Alexander Campbell, The Lunenburg Letter, September 1857.
